How Old is Too Old for Breast Augmentation?
Plastic surgeon Christine Petti, MD wants women to know that there is no upper age limit for breast augmentation. Whether you are 18-years-old or 75-years-old, you could potentially be good a candidate for the procedure. When determining candidacy for breast augmentation, Dr. Petti considers many factors, the most important of which is the health of the patient. Regardless of age, it is imperative that patients are in good enough health to undergo surgery and heal properly after the procedure is complete.
During a consultation, Dr. Petti thoroughly reviews each patient’s medical history and current health condition to establish their health status. Next, she evaluates breast skin quality and chest musculature to determine if the tissue can properly accommodate and support breast implants. It is typically more common for women in their late 40s and beyond to be well-suited for a breast augmentation combined with a breast lift (called breast augmentation mastopexy or BAM). If there is excess skin, lack of skin elasticity, or low positioning of the nipples, Dr. Petti may recommend a breast lift with implants to create firmer, more elevated breasts. Throughout the consultation, she listens closely to patients’ esthetic goals and discusses the unique results they can expect from surgery. Regardless of age, it is important for patients to have reasonable expectations and understand any potential limitations of the procedure before committing to surgery .
