Trim Excess Fat
Reduce fat and improve contours of many areas of the body including the neck, chest, abdomen, back, hips, flanks, thighs, and knees.
Imagine what life would be like without those love handles or saddle bags; perhaps you are looking instead for a leaner neck contour. Fat tends to localize or settle in the body areas that are hard to keep moving. Spot reduction just doesn’t work. Liposuction does. Liposuction is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures available, and it can get you in great shape! Liposuction has been proven successful in treating many areas of the body, including the neck, chest, abdomen, back, hips, flanks, thighs, and knees. Both men and women of all ages can benefit from liposuction. If you have localized deposits of fat that simply do not respond to diet and exercise, you may be an excellent candidate for liposuction.
Dr. Christine Petti also performs Smartlipo™ laser-assisted liposuction techniques at her Los Angeles area practice that allow for optimal results with minimal discomfort and recovery. She is well known for her artistic abilities in body sculpting. When it comes to performing liposuction, simply removing the fat isn’t enough; it takes a well-trained eye to deliver the best results. As an avid exercise and diet enthusiast, Dr. Petti understands what it means to be in great shape and can perform liposuction to best enhance your body image.
What Are the Benefits of Liposuction?
Liposuction can target excess fat deposits in multiple areas of the body. The procedure can ultimately enhance contours in the treated areas by removing pockets of excess fat that have proven resistant to traditional diet and exercise routines. Common regions that liposuction can address include the:
- Arms
- Back
- Flanks and hips
- Abdomen
- Neck
- Chest
- Thighs
- Knees
- Buttocks
Additionally, liposuction is known to produce only minimal scarring, and the treatment is customized for each patient’s unique needs and goals to provide the best possible outcome.
Who Is a Candidate for Liposuction?
Ideal candidates for liposuction are often those who are close to the average healthy weight for their body type, but are struggling with stubborn fat in isolated areas that is not responding to diet and exercise. Candidates should also be in good overall health, have realistic expectations for results, and be aware that liposuction is not intended as a weight loss procedure. It is important to note that traditional liposuction techniques will not be effective for patients who are primarily affected by excess skin in certain areas rather than excess fat. Procedures such as tummy tuck surgery, body contouring after weight loss, or other options designed to lift and tighten the skin may be explored in those cases. Dr. Petti also offers the state-of-the-art Smartlipo™ Triplex procedure, which combines a laser technique with liposuction to help produce firmer skin in the treatment area following removal of excess fat. Dr. Petti can talk more with you about the best options for your needs once you have been evaluated during the consultation.
How Is the Liposuction Procedure Performed?
Liposuction is typically performed under general anesthesia. A long, thin instrument called a cannula will be inserted through small incisions in the target areas, and the excess fat will be delicately and precisely suctioned out. Once the predetermined amount of fat has been removed, the incisions are closed and the area will be bandaged. As liposuction is often an outpatient procedure, you should be able to return home the same day.
How Is the Liposuction Recovery Process?
The recovery process varies among individuals as each patient’s healing time is unique to their own body’s response to the treatment. Many patients experience some level of swelling, bruising, and soreness following the liposuction procedure, though these side effects should subside gradually as the areas heal. While most individuals are able to return to their normal routines in a few days to a week, rigorous activities and workouts should be avoided for several weeks. Dr. Petti may recommend wearing a compression garment to help control swelling and promote a safe healing process.
How Long Do Liposuction Results Last?
When performed by a skilled and experienced plastic surgeon like Dr. Petti, liposuction results can be both exemplary and long-lasting. Typically, initial improvements are visible about a week later while more prominent results are often noticeable within six weeks. Six months after the procedure, the final results should be expected. Significant weight fluctuations can negatively affect procedure outcomes, so it is important for patients to adhere to a healthy lifestyle in order to maintain the effects of liposuction long into the future.
